Today when I went on break at work I saw something next to my car that had not been there when I arrived this morning. A kitten, laying on his side in the sunlight.
I went over to him and saw that he was dead. I brought him home and tried to give him the best end of life ceremony I could. I named him Freddie Mercury, because I love Queen and I played Queen songs on his funeral procession home from work. And, much like the singer, this sweet handsome baby died too young.
I dug a grave for him in our backyard and said a few words for him, and read a Robert Frost poem, Nothing Gold Can Stay. It’s one of my favorites and seemed very apt.
Where I found him is only a few yards from a highway, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he got hit by a car and crawled down next to my car and laid his little body down on the warm pavement and died. I’m glad he was in the sunshine when he died, and I’m glad he was next to my car and not someone else’s who didn’t care as much.
Freddie’s death didn’t have to happen. All over the world, humans are breeding their animals or not getting them spayed and neutered…there are far too many cats. So whether Freddie was a stray or a feral cat or abandoned by the side of the road, he was likely related in some way to irresponsible breeding practices. PLEASE spay and neuter your companion animals, and PLEASE STOP BREEDING. PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHELTERS. Animals like Freddie deserve better than to die in a Denny’s parking lot.
